History Made As Burundi Claims Third Of 12 AWCON Slots

After six times of asking, the Burundi Women’s national team, stylized ‘Swallows’ have made it through to the 2022 Women’s AWCON tournament.

History was written by the CECAFA side after they defeated Djibouti 5-0 in the reversed fixture on Friday 16, to take the aggregate total to 11-1, with the team now joining Morocco and Uganda, as qualified nations for the tournament slatted for July 2 this year.

Burundi now awaits 9 other teams to complete the pack of 12 but few would have put their money on the Swallows to be amongst the first teams to book their place in the tournament finals.

In the first round, Burundi sent 6 past Eritrea without reply in their double confrontation. Djibouti looked a kind enough draw for the so called minnows as they rolled over them in the first leg thanks to Bizima’s hat-trick and three other goals from: Djafari, Uwimana and Niyonkuru.

At the Josephine Wanjiku stadium, Djibouti could not come up with answers as even a first leg goal scored by Abdo was far fetched for them. Just like that, Burundi rallied for the onslaught, with Bizima scoring a brace, and Uwimana, a hat-trick to sail the team through to the AWCON.
