I Dream Of Winning The AWCON – Gabriel Zabo

After Cameroon’s emphatic 8 – nil victory over the Gambia, coach Gabriel Zabo told reporters that ‘he has a dream,’ post match.

The man who was picked to replace Alain Djeumfa late last year is on a mission to break the duck for team Cameroon, and probably clinch what will be the country’s first major trophy in Women’s football, later this year.

Zabo started his presser with calm and opined that it is of utter importance for his team to finish the job when the tables turn to Banjul, next week.

‘We won 8-0 because we merited, but we shouldn’t forget that there’s a return leg. The return leg will qualify us, not the first game. We have however taken a good step, reason why we will ask our girls straight away – to remain concentrated so we go and finish the work started.’

Cameroon has suffered a lot of heartache, in fact, a multitude of those coming from their arch rivals Nigeria. The Super Falcons beat Cameroon six years ago to claim the coveted trophy in Cameroon, and went further to repeat the trick in the semis in Ghana (2018) on penalties.

Great managers have come and gone; Enow Ngachu for instance, who started the whole revolution and build-up process, to Bryan Ndoko and Alain Djeumfa, all left without being able to dethrone ‘natural’ champions – Nigeria, in the last couple of years.

Gabriel Zabo, a modest person and sound technician who believes in his abilities and has left a mark on all Cameroonian clubs he’s trained so far, targets gold in the competition.

‘For all those who knew me since 2005, I kept saying at the Interpols while with Douala 5 that my dream as a trainer, will be to train one of the selection’s of Cameroon.

‘ Today I now have the chance to train this team. Now I dream of winning an AWCON,’ Zabo ended.
