‘I’m Extremely Proud’ – Embolo After Netting Winner Against Cameroon

Of all people, Breel Embolo scored the goal that acted like a ‘coup de grace’ as Switzerland defeated Cameroon 1-0 in group G of the World Cup opener.

The 25-year-old didn’t hide his emotions prior, during and after the match.

Quizzed on how it felt after scoring against the country where he was born, Embolo replied: ‘it takes away a bit from the dream scenario but I’m extremely proud for me, my family and my teammates. There were a lot of emotions, mostly positive ones’. the former Basel forward stated.

Embolo was born on 14 February 1997 in the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde. His parents separated when he was young and when he was six, his mother moved to France to attend school. Whilst there, she met her husband, a Swiss national. Then the following year, the family moved to Basel.

Embolo received Swiss citizenship on 12 December 2014. He previously played for the Swiss U16, U20 and U21s before graduating to the senior team where he has scored 12 goals in 60 appearances.
