Just In: Issa Diop Commits to Morocco
Fulham’s Issa Diop has finally given his green light to represent Morocco, ending years of speculation regarding his international future.
The 29-year-old center-back, who previously represented France at the youth levels, is set to complete his change of sporting nationality just in time for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. For Morocco, this news couldn’t have come at a more critical juncture.
Why Diop is the Missing Piece
While Morocco’s rise to the global elite has been built on defensive solidity, the Great Wall of the Atlas Lions has recently shown cracks due to aging and injury. Diop’s arrival addresses two massive voids in the squad.
Last month, the legendary captain Romain Saïss officially announced his retirement from international football. Saïss was the heartbeat of the defense that reached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals. His departure left a vacuum in leadership and physical presence—qualities that the 1.94m Diop possesses in abundance.
Compounding the loss of Saïss is the current status of Nayef Aguerd. The Marseille defender recently underwent surgery to address a chronic groin injury. With Aguerd expected to be sidelined for a significant period and needing time to find his rhythm post-recovery, Morocco was facing a defensive emergency heading into the business end of the season.
The FRMF’s success in convincing Diop—alongside other dual-nationals like Ayyoub Bouaddi—signals a new chapter for Moroccan football. As the Atlas Lions transition away from the Class of 2022, Diop is expected to be the new pillar around which the defense is built.
