KNVB Cup: Onana Keeps Guard As Ajax Reach Final

Andre Onana was between the sticks on Thursday March 3 as his Ajax side defeated AZ Alkmaar to reach the finals of the KNVB Cup.

The latter shook off an ankle injury suffered against Go Ahead over the weekend to aid his team to a convincing 2-0 win over AZ.

A goal in each half sealed the deal for the Dutch defending champions. Steven Berghuis opened the scoring at the 11th minute, and second half substitute Davy Klaassen sealed the deal with an 89th minute strike.

The clean sheet is Onana’s second in the competition and his second clean sheet entirely this season, in four games played.

Inter – bound keeper Onana is currently fielding in as the lone keeper left in Ajax’s senior team after injuries sustained by three others.

Pasveer is out for a little over 7 weeks and Jay Gorter, another senior keeper, is out for a fortnight. Maarten Stekelenburg undergoing rehabilitation and is likely to miss the remainder of the season.

Ajax will take on bitter rivals PSV on April 17 in the grand finale. Ajax are gunning for their 21st KNVB title after winning the piece of silverware last term.
