León Brace Sinks Pirates at FNB Stadium
The Betway Premiership title race has been revitalized after Mamelodi Sundowns secured a two-one victory over league leaders Orlando Pirates on Wednesday night. At the FNB Stadium, the Brazilians displayed the championship pedigree that has seen them dominate South African football for nearly a decade.
The result ends the Buccaneers’ impressive fourteen-game unbeaten run and narrows the gap at the top of the table to just three points.
Match Highlights: The Brayan León Show
While Pirates started the brighter of the two sides—forcing several heroic saves from Ronwen Williams early on—it was Sundowns’ Colombian marksman Brayan León who proved to be the difference-maker.
In the thirty-seventh minute, after a patient build-up, Nuno Santos delivered a pinpoint long pass that found León. The striker controlled beautifully before slotting a clinical finish past Sipho Chaine. Just four minutes later, in the forty-first minute, León struck again. He ghosted into the box to meet a low cross from Aubrey Modiba, side-footing it home to stun the home crowd and give Sundowns a two-zero cushion heading into the break.
The Fightback
Orlando Pirates emerged for the second half with renewed intensity and found a lifeline almost immediately. In the forty-seventh minute, Patrick Maswanganyi unleashed a powerful strike from distance. A significant deflection off Teboho Mokoena took the ball past a helpless Williams, igniting hope for a Soweto comeback.
Despite relentless pressure from the Buccaneers in the closing stages, including a header that forced a desperate save from Williams and several tactical substitutions by Abdeslam Ouaddou, Sundowns held firm to claim all three points.
The State of the Log
This midweek clash was widely viewed as a six-pointer, and the outcome has shifted the momentum of the twenty-twenty-six season.
Currently, Orlando Pirates remain in first position with thirty-eight points from seventeen matches. Mamelodi Sundowns follow closely in second place with thirty-five points from sixteen matches, while Kaizer Chiefs sit in third with thirty points from fifteen matches played.
Sundowns now trail by only three points and, crucially, hold a game in hand. If they win their outstanding fixture, they will reclaim the top spot on goal difference.
