Malawi (0)vs Cameroon (4): Lions Defeat 10 – Man Malawi To Set – Up Enthralling Finale Against Cote D’Ivoire
There’s a red alert in group D of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers as Cameroon has temporarily taken the front with their 4-0 victory over Malawi, at the Orlando stadium in SA.
The Indomitable Lions shook the group D table, moving to 12 points while awaiting the Cote D’Ivoire against Mozambique game, to be played later today.
Stakes were at hill – top as Antonio Conceiçao and his men knew a mis – placed step could spell danger.
The game started with both sides being weary of each other.
The areal threat of Malawi’s captain Limbikani Mzava was glaring and his header at the 17th minute from a Chester corner, kept Onana on his toes, despite the ball just going wide.
At the 20th minute, goalkeeper Brighton Munthali hesitated on a lose ball in his area, and Moumi Ngamaleu did well to stand up the Keeper, before placing it for Vincent Aboubakar, whose shot was cleared in an unorthodox manner by John Banda.
The referee adjudged that Banda had handled, and then gave Banda a matching order. The resulting spot – kick was calmly converted by Vincent Aboubakar, for one – nil Cameroon.
At the 33rd minute, Mbaizo found Toko Ekambi at the far post with an inch perfect delivery – but the Olympique Lyonnais man tried a shot between the legs of Munthali, that was saved.
Michael Ngadeu struck the bar at the 38th minute of the game from a Zambo free – kick. It wasn’t long until Zambo got himself on the score sheet at the 40th minute with a thunderbolt – from Moumi Ngamaleu’s corner, taken short.
The second half was close to a snail – pace, probably because Cameroon was two goals clear, and just began using the game as a perfect dress rehearsal for Tuesday.
Peter Banda and Idana were sent in to serve as fresh legs for coach Meck Mwase with an hour gone in the game. Mwase’s substitutions were answered by Conceiçao, who took out Aboubakar in place of Bahoken, and brought in James Siliki for Zambo Anguissa.
Cameroon played with poise in the game and later introduced Christian Bassogog and Ignatius Ganago, and it wasn’t long until the third goal came in.
Christian Bassogog got two goals in quick succession at the 85th and 86th minute to make it 4-0 in favour of the Lions.
Cote D’Ivoire are up against Mozambique at the Stade de l’amitie later at 8 pm local time today. A win will see Cote D’Ivoire take top – spot again, but all is really shaping up for Tuesday 16th at the Japoma Omnisports Stadium.
