AFCON 2021: Mali Seeded Top In Group F

By Ngome Michael

The Eagles of Mali will take on the Nzalang Naćional of Equatorial Guinea in the next round of the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, after ending atop group F.

The Eagles made light work of Mauritania on the final day in Douala to cement top spot in a group that had 2004 hosts, Tunisia and debutants – Gambia.

Massadio Haidara scored what could be the fastest goal of the competition which came two minutes after kick-off in Douala.

Former Coton Sport of Garoua Manager, Didier Gomes Da Rossa’s team went ahead in the second half to concede their 7th goal of the tournament slotted by Mali’s perfect spot kick specialist, Ibrahima Koné.

The Sarpsborg 08 (Norway) man has a 100% conversion rate from the penalty spot. He has made no mistake in the last three occasions in which he has been called to execute his duty for Mali in the AFCON.

Kone scored Mali’s winner from the same position against Tunisia in a game which rather had a controversial end due to officiating. He placed his Nation ahead against Gambia before Barrow replied in a 1-1 draw.

He once again proved undoubted against Mauritania which places him among the top scorers with (3 goals), two behind Aboubakar Vincent.

Mauritania’s best chance came through Guesouma Fofana who stroke a straight one into the goalie with Adama Ba forcing another save from Ibrahim Mounkoro.

Mali dominated the game with accurate passing completion.

The Eagles, thanks to Ibrahima Kone have a far better penalty record than Tunisia who lost all three group stage penalties, both in critical and less critical moments.
