Matip & Choupo Make UCL Quarter Final

Joel Matip played alongside Van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defense, and despite the Reds’ 1-0 defeat on the night, they went through (2-1) on aggregate.

A two – nil win in the reversed fixture did the trick for Matip and co, even as it was youngster Ibrahima Konaté sitting-in for Matip in the first leg, at the San Siro.

Inter brought their ‘A’ game at Anfield and Liverpool only managed to walk past the finish line. Matip struck the uptight in the first half, and Salah hit the left and right posts in both halves, but the goals dried up.

Manchester City summer target Lautaro Martínez scored the game’s lone goal at the 61st minute, but Sanchez’ tackle on Fabinho earned him a second yellow that equalled red. Just like that, the action was the turning point of the game, and the Reds are well on course to clinching their second UCL after under Klopp, after that of 2019.

Joel Matip in action against Inter

Just like Matip, his Cameroon International teammate, Choupo Moting will equally play in the quarter finals of the competition.

Choupo made his way in against Salzburg at the 66th minute of play, replacing Kingsley Coman. He entered when the score cards read 4-1. Lewandowski bagged a hat-trick, Muller scored a brace, Sane and Gnabry shared a goal each as it eventually ended 7-1 for the hosts, who avoided a first leg scare in Austria (1-1), with Choupo contributing 13 minutes that time.

Of these two, Cameroon still depends on Choupo Moting after the appointment of Rigobert Song as the new head coach.

Song has pre selected Choupo for the double confrontation against Algeria on the 25 and 29 of this month.

Matip’s case with the indomitable Lions looks even more complicated, as he appears to have turned down Rigobert Song.
