Miguel Gamondi Appointed Interim Coach Ahead of AFCON

With less than two months until the start of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has made a significant shake-up, announcing the appointment of Miguel Ángel Gamondi as the interim head coach of the national team, the Taifa Stars.

The Argentine tactician takes the reins following the mutual termination of the contract of his predecessor, Hemed Suleiman, commonly known as “Morocco.” The decision to part ways with Suleiman, who had successfully guided the team to the AFCON finals, reflects the federation’s desire for a new direction ahead of the continental showpiece set to run from December 21 to January 18.

Gamondi Returns to Familiar Territory

Gamondi, a well-traveled and respected figure in African football, returns to the Tanzanian setup after spells with local heavyweights. He is currently the head coach of Singida Black Stars, and the TFF has confirmed that discussions were held with the club to secure his temporary release for the national assignment.

His previous experience in the country, which includes a Premier League title with Young Africans (Yanga SC) and leading Singida BS to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage, is seen as a key advantage. TFF officials believe his deep understanding of the local players and the East African football landscape gives him the best chance to quickly stabilize the squad and prepare them for a challenging Group C alongside powerhouses like Nigeria, Tunisia, and fellow East African side Uganda.

The Challenge Ahead

The managerial change, coming at such a critical juncture, highlights a pattern of instability in the Taifa Stars’ technical bench, following the earlier departure of Algerian coach Adel Amrouche after the last AFCON in 2024.

Gamondi’s immediate task will be to foster cohesion and instill a competitive tactical structure within a very short preparation window. His tactical flexibility—known for building disciplined, compact teams that can transition effectively—will be tested as he aims to lead Tanzania to a memorable performance at their fourth-ever Cup of Nations appearance.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach is expected to hold his first training camp before the end of the month as the Taifa Stars embark on a new, high-stakes chapter driven by the urgency of the upcoming AFCON.
