Morocco Represents Africa as the Sole Contender in Futsal World Cup Knockout Stage
By Esther E. Otto
In a thrilling journey at the ongoing Futsal World Cup in Uzbekistan, Morocco stands tall as the last hope for Africa after a series of intense matches. The African champions secured a spot in the round of 16 with two victories under their belt, despite a setback against reigning champions Portugal in a 4-1 defeat.
Sadly, other African contenders such as Libya and Angola bid farewell early in the tournament. Libya managed a solitary win out of three matches, while Angola struggled, facing defeat in all three of their encounters.
MORROCCO VS IRAN
Morocco’s upcoming clash against Iran is poised to be a showdown of titans. Iran, having dominated Group F with a flawless record of 9 points, outshining teams like France, Venezuela, and Guatemala. A key player to watch in the Iranian squad is Aghapour, who has already notched up six goals in Uzbekistan 2024. His prowess on the field places him in the league of Iranian greats like Hashem Hidari and Saeid Rajabi Shirazi.
Ranked 4th globally, Iran boasts a formidable history in futsal, clinching third place in the 2016 World Cup in Colombia and finishing fourth in the 1992 tournament in Hong Kong. Their dominance in the AFC Futsal Championship, triumphing 12 times, solidifies their position as a top contender in the competition.
For Morocco, this match presents a formidable challenge, yet an opportunity to showcase their resilience. A victory over Iran would not only be a remarkable feat for the North African team but also propel them towards a deeper run in the World Cup, signaling their intent to leave a mark on the global futsal stage.
