Mozambique Shatters AFCON Curse in Five-Goal Thriller against Gabon

Mozambique has finally shed a decades-long burden by securing a historic 3-2 victory over Gabon.

Entering the match at the Stade Adrar, the “Mambas” carried the weight of a staggering 16-match winless streak that spanned six tournament appearances and nearly forty years. This performance was a statement of intent that fundamentally changed the narrative surrounding Mozambican football on the continental stage.

The breakthrough began late in the first half when the Mambas turned pressure into precision. In the 37th minute, Geny Catamo delivered a sublime cross that found the head of Faizal Bangal, who directed it home to open the scoring.

Mozambique’s momentum doubled just five minutes later when the veteran Dominguês was brought down in the penalty area by Bruno Ecuele Manga. Catamo, shifting from provider to finisher, stepped up to the spot and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

Gabon, however, refused to exit the half quietly. Deep into stoppage time, the legendary Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang proved why he remains one of the continent’s most feared strikers. After Didier Ndong’s initial strike was parried into the danger zone, Aubameyang pounced on the loose ball to find the net. The goal gave the Panthers lifeline and cemented Aubameyang’s legacy as the second oldest goalscorer to ever feature on an AFCON scoresheet.

Despite the Gabon resurgence, Mozambique reclaimed control shortly after the interval. In the 52nd minute, Witi delivered a high-arching cross into the heart of the box, where Diogo Calila rose above the defenders to power a header into the roof of the net. This third goal restored a two-goal cushion and forced Gabon into a series of desperate tactical shifts, including the introduction of fresh attacking legs in Alex Moucketou-Moussounda and Royce Openda.

The final minutes of the match became a test of Mozambican character. Gabon’s persistence eventually yielded a goal in the 86th minute, as Moucketou-Moussounda capitalized on a corner-kick scramble to narrow the gap to a single goal. With the clock ticking down and Gabon launching a relentless aerial assault, the responsibility fell on goalkeeper Ernan Siluane. Through a series of acrobatic saves against efforts from Mario Lemina and Jacques Ekomié, Siluane ensured that history would not be denied. When the final whistle blew, it signaled the end of a 40-year wait and the beginning of a new era for Mozambique in the Africa Cup of Nations.
