Nigeria Fall to Norway in U-20 World Cup Opener
Nigeria’s Under-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, began their 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign with a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Norway in a Group F clash at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca on Monday evening.
Despite largely dominating possession and creating a plethora of chances, the two-time silver medalists were undone by an early penalty, leaving them chasing the game and ultimately empty-handed.
The decisive moment came in the 9th minute. Following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, defender Daniel Bamyi was adjudged to have committed a handball inside the box. Norway’s captain, Rasmus Holten, calmly converted the resulting spot-kick past goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, giving the Scandinavians a precious early lead.
From that point, Nigeria launched wave after wave of attacks, particularly in the second half, but were repeatedly thwarted by a resolute Norwegian defence and sheer misfortune.
The Flying Eagles came agonizingly close to an equalizer on several occasions. Just after the break, Kparobo Arierhi’s left-footed shot dragged just wide with the goalkeeper beaten. The woodwork then denied Nigeria in the 63rd minute when Tahir Maigana’s shot struck the base of the upright.
Nigeria also felt aggrieved when two separate penalty appeals in the second half were waved away by the referee. Norway, meanwhile, were content to sit deep and absorb the pressure, defending their narrow lead with numbers behind the ball.
The result means Norway joins Colombia atop Group F, while the Flying Eagles will need to quickly regroup as they face Saudi Arabia in their crucial second group match on Thursday. Despite the loss, the performance showed the Nigerian side has the ability to create opportunities, but a lack of clinical finishing proved costly in their opening fixture.
