Nsame Breaks Into Podium Of Yong Boys’ Highest Goal Scorers In Defeat Against Basel

Cameroonian international Jean Pierre Nsame made a piece of history in his team’s 2-1 defeat to Basel on the road, on Saturday, April 1st.

Jean-Pierre Nsame’s opening goal in Geneva was his 119th goal in the YB jersey, making him the only the 3rd player in the club’s history behind Geni Meier (313) and Ernst Wechselberger (151) to mark those figures.

From a YB perspective, the defeat would certainly have been avoidable. Young Boys controlled the game from the 15th to the 60th minutes. Despite multiple chances, only one was converted.  Nsame headed in after 25 minutes from a Blum cross. It was the attacker’s 119th goal in a competitive game, so he now occupies third place in the all-time YB list of goalscorers – behind Meier (313), Wechselberger (151), surpassing Hoarau (118) and Zuffi (100).

Even before the halftime, YB was unlucky twice with balls that flew over goal. First, Vouilloz struck a Fassnacht cross against the post, and a little later, Monteiro’s shot missed target marginally.

The home team got into the game better and deservedly equalised after 70 minutes. Bedia scored courtesy a pass from Touati to make it 1-1. The Servette striker beat YB goalie Racioppi from close range. Finally, at the 84th minute, Plucke snatched a late goal. Young Boys almost equalised in added time, but Frick made a brilliant save after Ugrinic hit the ball cleanly.

YB continue their journey on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. with the cup semi-final game in Basel.
