Onana touchdown on Ivorian territory ahead of Cameroon’s AFCON opener
After delaying his departure for AFCON 2023 with Cameroon as long as possible in order to honor his club commitments, Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana – finally joined camp in the early hours of Monday, Jan. 15.
Hours after taking part in MU’s match against Tottenham (2-2) on Sunday, in game day 21 of the Premier League, Onana headed to the Liverpool airport.
From Liverpool, he took a private flight around 10:30 p.m. to Yamoussoukro, where the Indomitable Lions will play their AFCON opener against Guinea at 5 p.m. GMT.
According to sportglitz sources, Fabrice Ondoa will keep goal for the Indomitable Lions against Syli National.
While camping of the selection began on December 29, this preferential treatment granted to Onana inevitably caused discussions and many voices were raised.
Faced with this controversy, coach Rigobert Song decided to remain unmoved and support his player. “We all know that Onana remains one of the best goalkeepers. If we gave him authorization, it’s because we know the qualities he has,” explained the technician this Sunday at a press conference.
