Paul Put Unveils Uganda’s Final 28-Man Squad for AFCON 2025
Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has officially confirmed his final 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. After missing the last two editions of the tournament, the Cranes are returning to the continental stage with a roster that emphasizes a “youth revolution,” featuring 24 players who will be making their tournament debuts.
The Return of the Legendary Captain
The most significant inclusion is veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango. The Mamelodi Sundowns star, who famously led Uganda in the 2017 and 2019 editions, returns to provide much-needed leadership to an otherwise inexperienced group. Onyango headlines a goalkeeping department that also includes Salim Omar Magoola (Richards Bay) and Nafian Alionzi (Defence Forces). Notably, Charles Lukwago was the high-profile omission as the provisional list was trimmed to the final 28.
A Youthful and Resilient Defense
In defense, Put has combined physical local talent with internationally based professionals. The backline features the likes of Toby Sibbick (Burton Albion), Jordan Obita (Hibernian), and Abdu Azizi Kayondo (Slovan Liberec). They are joined by Elio Caprodossi, Timothy Awany, Isaac Muleme, Rogers Torach, Hilary Mukundane, and Kenneth Semakula. The defensive unit suffered one late cut, with SC Villa’s David Owori missing out on the final trip to Morocco.
The Engine Room and New Spark
The midfield will be anchored by the reliable Khalid Aucho (Singida Black Stars), one of the few remaining players with prior AFCON experience. He will be supported by Ronald Ssekiganda, Bobosi Byaruhanga, and Baba Alhassan.
Creativity remains a priority for Paul Put, who has included the highly-rated Allan Okello and the teenage sensation Travis Mutyaba. However, the biggest talking point is 17-year-old forward James Bogere, who earned his spot after a spectacular performance at the U-17 World Cup in Qatar.
Attacking Firepower
Uganda’s attack features a diverse range of goal-scoring options. In-form striker Mato Rogers, who has been prolific for FK Vardar this season, leads the line alongside Denis Omedi and Steven Mukwala. The squad also features Melvyn Lorenzen, Uchechukwu Ikpeazu, Jude Ssemugabi, Reagan Mpande, Ivan Ahimbisibwe, and Shafik Nana Kwikiriza.
Tournament Outlook: Group C Challenges
Uganda faces a daunting task in Group C, where they will play their matches in Rabat and Fez. Their campaign begins on December 23 against Tunisia, followed by a highly anticipated “East African Derby” against Tanzania on December 27. They will close the group stage against the Super Eagles of Nigeria on December 30.
“Our major target is to qualify from the group. This squad represents the future of Ugandan football, and these young players are ready to prove themselves on the big stage.” — Paul Put, Uganda Cranes Head Coach
