Qatar 2022: Bale’s Late Penalty Rescues A Point For Wales Against The US

Thanks to a converted penalty from Bale, Wales snatched a draw against the United States (1-1) in the second game of Group B on Monday Nov. 21.

It turned out to be a frustrating result for the US who were clearly superior in the first stanza. Their control and high pressing prevented the Welsh from getting out of their half of the field.

The ball possession of the United States increased and became more after the hour mark as Wales was clearly under duress.

Timothy Weah opened the scoring at the 36th minute after a nicely weighted pass from Pulisic.

It was hard to see how Wales could regain control. And yet, Robert Page’s men, thanks to the introduction of center-forward Moore, forced the Americans to defend in the second half.

Their keeper Turner had to smack a diving header from Ben Davies out, before seeing Moore place his headed attempt over the top.

The game was delicately poised just before a moment of schoolboy defending landed Wales a penalty kick. Zimmerman needlessly plowed into Gareth Bale, with the Wales forward’s back to the goal.

Bale converted the resulting penalty kick in the 82nd minute, giving Wales a 1-1 draw this morning that left the Americans feeling frustrated and made their path to the knockout stage more precarious.
