Qatar 2022: Danielle Orsato Appointed Referee For Tomorrow’s Opener

Daniele Orsato has been appointed adjudicator for the opening match of the 2022 World Cup pitting hosts Qatar against Ecuador on Sunday at the Al Bayt stadium

The reigning European champions who failed to qualify for the World Cup will have an emblem in the tourney opener on Sunday for the opening match of the competition, as Daniele Orsato has been appointed referee for the game.

The 46-year-old Italian referee notably officiated in the 2020 Champions League final won by Bayern Munich against PSG in Lisbon. He was also present four years ago in Russia, during the previous World Cup, where Italy was still absent, as he was in charge of the video assistance referee (VAR).

Orsato is an approved FIFA referee since 2010. Qatar and Ecuador face each other at 7:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. in Cameroon) at the Al Bayt Stadium in Doha on Sunday.

The host nation, playing in its first World Cup, and Ecuador, in its fourth, are in Group A with Senegal and the Netherlands.

Danielle Orsato’s Italy creates a huge vacuum with her absence in the 2022 World Cup. Eliminated in the play-off phase by North Macedonia, the Squadra Azzurra with four trophies in the history of the competition (1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006), has not participated in a World Cup since 2014.
