Qatar 2022: ‘I Have Been Punished By Eto’o & Rigobert Song,’ Onana Breaks Silence

Andre Onana has broken silence for the first time since being controversially left out of Cameroon’s team that obtained a three-all tie against Serbia this morning.

Equinox TV spoke to the Inter shot-stopper and he stated that he is serving a punishment dished out to him by FECAFOOT president, Samuel Eto’o and head coach Rigobert Song.

As earlier reported by sportglitz.com, Onana already has a flight ticket to leave Doha, but the former Ajax man is still at the Indomitable Lions base at the Banyam Tree hotel.

‘I was punished by President Eto’o and coach Rigobert Song who are like my Dads, I respect their decision,’ Onana told Nana Paul Sabin of Equinox.

Quizzed on the exact reason why he was punished, he added: ‘I don’t want to say more, let’s wait for the press release from FECAFOOT.’

The Cameroon Football Federation later came up with a press release but it doesn’t state further any reasons asides ‘indiscipline’ for the latter’s rustication.

‘The Cameroonian Football Federation wishes to announce to the general public that from a decision taken by Mr. Rigobert Song, coach of the national team, Andre Onana has temporarily been suspended,’ part of the release states.

Onana was asked to stay in camp in Doha just before the game against Serbia for issues regarding ‘indiscipline.’

The goal guard has been Rigobert Song’s first choice goalie since the arrival of the gaffer in March, and he played a pivotal role in Cameroon’s world cup qualification especially in games against Cote D’Ivoire and Algeria.

Onana was between the sticks for his world cup debut against Switzerland and put up a record number of passes for a goalkeeper (61) including 26 of those out of his area.

Davies Epassy of Abha club will therefore guard goal from now hence, with a crucial game against Brazil lurking.

Onana has 35 appearances for the Cameroon. It is difficult to see where the indomitable Lions go from here, given the lad’s quality.
