Qatar 2022: Indomitable Lions Legend, Aboubakar Hints On Retirement

Aboubakar’s post match comments suggested that the Indomitable Lions legend is thinking about calling time with the national team after prolly playing his last World Cup match against Brazil

Lone scorer against Brazil for Cameroon’s third match at the 2022 World Cup, Vincent Aboubakar, who was playing his third match in this competition, said he was optimistic for the next generation.

Despite Cameroon’s victory (1-0) against Brazil, the central Africans will not play in the round of 16 of the World Cup because of the victory of Switzerland (3-2) against Serbia. It was the first victory for an African nation that against the Seleçao in the World Cup, and who else, but Vincent Aboubakar, was there to score yet again, in the big occasion.

“It’s a historic victory but later, the qualification did not depend on us. We won and Switzerland also did so, we will say that it is a bitter-sweet victory. Nevertheless, we came out with our heads held high, especially since Cameroon has not won a World Cup match for a very long time. This is proof that there is progress and we hope that the generations that will come behind will do better than us,” he said.

It should be recalled that Cameroon had not won a match in this competition since June 2002 against Saudi Arabia. It is Samuel Eto’o, current president of FECAFOOT, who scored the only goal in 2002 when Cameroon last won a World Cup game. Aboubakar’s comments suggest that he has played his last World Cup match and is already thinking of his international retirement.

Vincent Aboubakar won the golden boot earlier in January after scoring an astonishing 8 goals, leading Cameroon to third place in the 2021 AFCON. The former Porto and Besiktas poacher perhaps most memorably, scored Cameroon’s winner at the 2017 AFCON final in Gabon.

Aboubakar has scored 39 goals in 95 matches, as he is 6 goals behind Omam Biyik (45), and 29 goals behind all time leading goal scorer, Samuel Eto’o – who ended his International career with 56 goals.
