Qatar 2022: Netherlands Defeat Hosts Qatar To Top Group A.
The Dutch were never in doubt as they sealed victory against hosts Qatar on Tuesday, November 29 at Al-Bayt stadium. The Oranjes easily won (2-0) thanks to Cody Gakpo’s third goal in this World Cup and a goal from Frenkie de Jong.
There were no surprises on Tuesday, as the Netherlands – widely considered favorites beat hosts Qatar.
Louis van Gaal’s men had an inaugural victory against Senegal (2-0) then a twitchy draw against Ecuador (1-1) prior to their third game. Against Qatar, a draw was enough to ensure qualification for the round of 16 of this World Cup, but they started the game in earnest, in the wake of a stirring Memphis Depay who started the first game in the competition.
After several chances, the Oranjes logically opened the scoring through Cody Gakpo, for his third goal at the 26rh minute. The Dutch would have had more but waited until return from the locker room to widen the gap, with another goal by Frenkie de Jong at the 48th minute.
The Netherlands nearly made it a little worse courtesy the second half substitute Steven Berghuis at the 69th minute but Gakpo handled earlier in the action and it was signaled by the VAR. The same Berghuis also smashed Barsham’s crossbar with a superb curling shot in added time.
The Netherlands will meet the second in pool B (United States), for a place in the quarter-finals on Saturday December 3 (4:00 p.m.).
