Qatar 2022: Swiss Forward Breel Embolo Admits ‘Soft Spot’ For Native Cameroon

Before his departure for the 2022 World Cup, Breel Embolo and some of his teammates spoke to Monaco-Tribune about the football jamboree.

Housed in group G along with Brazil, Serbia and Cameroon, Switzerland will face Cameroon in its first game that comes up on November 24th.

It will be a special match for Breel Embolo, the Swiss talisman who will go up against his country of origin.

The Yaounde native spoke about his admiration for the Indomitable Lions: “When I chosed Switzerland, I always had this part of me which wanted to represent my native country. But we can’t swoop as we do in clubs to play for two different nations. I am Cameroon’s number one fan. I have many friends with the indomitable Lions. We sometimes hang out during vacation in Cameroon.

‘This is a special game to me and my whole family. There will be a lot of emotions,’ said the erstwhile Basel player.

Aged 25, Embolo admits having kept very strong ties with his native country even after he picked Switzerland. He even regularly spends his holidays in Cameroon and adds that majority of his family lives there.

‘I try to go to cameroon once or twice a year to keep the link. It’s important not to forget where I come from,’ he explained.

At the end of his time  at FC Basel, Embolo then aged 17 had to choose between Switzerland and Cameroon. The player recounts that at the time, the task wasn’t easy: “It was a difficult moment. I put aside the choice for a few months. I even had the opportunity to join Cameroon, which didn’t happen. It was not an easy choice, but my family respected my choice, that is the most important thing,” the pacy forward ended.
