Qatar 2022: Tata Martino Steps Down Coaching Role After Mexico Are Eliminated

Mexico coach Gerardo Martino, equally known as Tata has announced his departure from the selection. El Tri was eliminated in the first round of the World Cup, finishing third in Group C behind Argentina and Poland, despite winning on Wednesday against Saudi Arabia.

Gerardo “Tata” Martino of Argentina and his lads were booted out of the World Cup on Wednesday night despite beating Saudi Arabia 2-1, and the Argentine has announced he is stepping down with immediate effect.

“I am primarily responsible for the frustration and disappointment we are experiencing. It is a source of sadness but I take full responsibility for this failure. My contract expires with the final whistle, there is nothing else to do,” said the Argentinian technician after the match.

“I think we weren’t knocked out in previous games but in this one, he added. Today was when we dominated, created goalscoring opportunities. We could have scored as much as necessary but no.”

Martino had been Mexico manager since 2019 and El Tri will not see the Round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time since 1990.
