Raja Dismisses Wilmots

The Moroccan side Raja Casablanca has decided to separate from former Red Devils coach Marc Wilmots.

Marc Wilmots, erstwhile Belgian national team coach between May 2012 and July 2016, is no longer the coach of Raja Club Athletic club, the side has officially confirmed. The Casablanca-based Moroccan club announced it on Twitter on Sunday.

The 52-year-old technician arrived in early November. The sack comes at a time when Raja is on a six-game unbeaten streak, four league draws and two African Champions League wins.

When Wilmots arrived, Raja was second, five points behind leaders Wydad Casablanca, a gap that has now been increased to eight points.

Wilmots, free since the end of his short-lived adventure in charge of Iran between May and December 2019, was leading a club for the third time after his experiences at Schalke as interim between March and June 2003 – and then at Sint-Truiden between July 2004 and February 2005. An assistant to Georges Leekens then Dick Advocaat with the Red Devils, the latter took charge of the Belgium national team in 2012.

Despite two quarter-finals, at the 2014 World Cup and then at Euro 2016, he was sacked in the wake of the defeat against Wales at the 2016 European Championship.
