Rigobert Song backs Onana on decision to play 2 games in 48 hours.

Indomitable Lions coach, Rigobert Song has sided with Onana on his decision to play 2 games in 48 hours for club and country.

The former Indomitable Lions captain, now gaffer, said at the team’s pre-match presser that, Onana’s decision will not be a bother at all.

“We are fine with the decision,” Song started before pointing out his reason;

“The fact that he [Onana] will arrive camp late is not a discomfort to the team. If we permitted him, it means we know his ability and what he brings. He has the experience”, ended Song.

Andre Onana will travel to the Africa Cup of Nations after Manchester United’s match against Tottenham this Sunday, a day before Cameroon’s first AFCON game.

Cameroon had wanted the goalkeeper to travel with the squad as early as possible with their first match of AFCON going ahead on January 15.

However, United reached an amicable agreement with the nation that will see Onana travel straight after the Premier League fixture against Tottenham on Sunday January 14.

Cameroon take on Guinea on January 15 and Onana could start both matches for club and country within 48 hours.

United signed the 27-year-old from Inter Milan last summer aware of the upcoming AFCON in the Ivory Coast but under the knowledge that he had retired from international duty.

That decision wasn’t reversed, however, this season by the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT).

And while the Red Devils have not stood in Onana’s way over his changed decision, both club and country have accepted that United did not expect to lose him at this stage of the season.

It has led Cameroon to be somewhat lenient with the player and have allowed United to keep hold of the keeper for another week.
