Rigobert Song appointed CAR coach

Indomitable Lions legend and erstwhile coach of the Cameroon senior men’s national team, Rigobert Song – has been offered a top job as coach of the Central African Republic, succeeding Raoul Savoy.

Rumours had been circulating on social media ever since Rigobert Song travelled to Bangui, the capital of Central African Republic on Monday. sportglitz.com can now report that the news is official.

The decree appointing Rigobert Song was signed by the Minister for the Promotion of Youth, Sport and Physical Education.

Details of the contract including the duration and salary to be paid to the two-time AFCON winner has not been revealed.

Rigobert Song reportedly met with President Faustin Archange Touadera before the appointment was made official.

Song made two years as coach of the Indomitable Lions before he was fired on February 29, 2024.

He helped qualify the Lions for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after beating Algeria and also helped the country’s national team to qualify for the 2023 AfCON in Côte d’Ivoire but the national team’s performance at both events was below par.

The immediate challenge for Song will be the six remaining matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where the Central African Republic is currently in a challenging position, sitting second-to-last in their group with just four points from four matches. However, there is still hope for advancement, and Song is expected to begin his coaching duties in March when the team faces Madagascar and Mali in crucial qualifiers.
