Rulani Mokwena Detained in Algiers over Unreported Currency
According to reports surfacing from Kooralife, Mokwena has allegedly been detained at the Algiers airport following a security discovery of a significant sum of undeclared foreign currency.
The reports suggest that the South African attempted to depart Algeria when customs officials intervened.
Upon inspection, authorities reportedly found approximately $16,000 in foreign currency that had not been declared to the relevant financial institutions.
What has captured the public’s attention—and added a layer of intrigue to the story—is the method of concealment. The funds were allegedly found hidden in various unconventional places, including: Inside a shoe, tucked within the pages of a book and scattered locations among his personal belongings.
Following the discovery, Rhulani Mokwena was reportedly prevented from leaving Algerian territory yesterday.
Local authorities proceeded with standard legal protocols for currency smuggling and financial infractions.
Sources indicate that the coach has since been presented before the judiciary to provide an explanation for the source of the funds and the lack of proper declaration. In many North African jurisdictions, strict capital flight laws dictate that any sum exceeding a specific threshold must be declared upon entry and exit.
Rulani Mokwena, known for his tactical brilliance and successful stint with Mamelodi Sundowns, spent 8 months at the helm of MC Algers with the goal of restoring the club to glory. As of now, neither MC Alger nor Mokwena’s legal representatives have issued a formal statement regarding the validity of these claims or the current status of the legal proceedings.
