Samoa Exit U-17 World Cup with Heads Held High Despite Nigeria Defeat
Samoa’s inspiring run at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco has come to an end following a courageous 4-0 defeat to African giants Nigeria in Rabat. While the loss confirmed their exit at the group stage, the team leaves the tournament with valuable experience and a clear vision for the future.
Just as they had in hard-fought previous fixtures against France and Canada, Samoa battled bravely but ultimately struggled to match the pace and clinical finishing of the Nigerian side.
Nigeria wasted no time in making their presence felt, securing a commanding lead early in the first half. Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 13th minute, expertly latching onto a through-ball and slotting it into the bottom-right corner. The lead doubled in the 28th minute when captain Shakirat Moshood calmly converted a penalty. Six minutes later, the fate of the match was sealed when Nguemo Terlumun capitalised on a defensive error, setting up Joseph for her second goal of the night.
A Resilient Second Half
Despite conceding three goals before the break, the Samoan squad showcased immense resilience in the second half, delivering arguably their best 45 minutes of the tournament. The defensive shape tightened, and the team began to press forward, creating moments of genuine danger.
Goalkeeper Grace Ae put on a stellar performance, pulling off a string of world-class saves to keep the Super Falcons at bay. At the other end, Samoa came agonizingly close to scoring when Macey Tuiolosega unleashed a powerful long-range effort that forced Nigerian keeper Sylvia Echefu to palm the shot onto the crossbar.
Nigeria, however, managed one final spectacular goal in the 67th minute to close the scoring. Cutting in from the left flank, Azeezat Oduntan curled a magnificent right-footed shot past Ae and into the top-right corner.
Looking to 2026
While a third consecutive defeat marks the conclusion of their Moroccan campaign, Samoa walks away with their heads held high. Their participation was a monumental achievement for the island nation, and the experience gained on the world stage is invaluable for the players’ development.
The good news for Samoan football fans is that the journey is not over. Thanks to their runners-up finish at the 2025 OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, Samoa has already secured their place at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2026. This young squad has proven they belong among the world’s best, and they now have a clear year to prepare for their next shot on the global stage.
