Senegal Make AWCON After Nerve Wracking Shootout Against Mali

Senegal have made their return to the big time (Women’s Africa Cup of Nations) after 10 years of absence in the competition.

Mali returned the favor by defeating Senegal 1-0 at home, but Senegal was the calmer of both country’s in post match penalties and emerged victorious after converting 3 kicks, as opposed to Mali’s two.

The female Eagles of Mali will feel hard done by, after being denied a chance to take part in what would have been their 8th participation in the Women’s AWCON.

Les Aiglonnes won 1-0 in regular playing time, which sent the game to a dead rubber mode. Mali’s lone goal in the reversed fixture came courtesy Agueissa Diarra, which equaled Nguenar Ndiaye’s effort in the first leg.

Post match penalties had to be used to separate the both sides, as the game ended 1-1 two legs. Fatoumatou, Salimata Diarra and Niakate missed target for Mali. Nguenar Ndiaye missed for the Senegalese but it counted for nothing, as three others converted without blink from the spot.

It is Senegal’s second appearance in the African Women’s Cup of Nations finals after that in 2012.
