South Africa Stun USA with 2-1 Victory in U-20 World Cup Thriller
In a surprising turn of events to conclude Group E of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, the South Africa U-20 Men’s National Team defeated the United States 2-1 at Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua. The crucial victory secured South Africa’s place in the Round of 16 for the first time in 16 years.
The match, which served as the group stage finale for both teams, was a high-stakes affair with qualification for the knockout rounds on the line.
The United States, who had won their previous two matches, initially took the lead in the 12th minute when defender Noah Cobb headed home a goal. However, South Africa quickly responded five minutes later with an equalizer, which was credited as an own goal by U.S. defender Josh Wynder, leveling the score at 1-1.
The decisive moment came just before halftime. In the second minute of first-half stoppage time, Gomolemo Kekana scored the match-winner for South Africa, putting the “Amajita” ahead 2-1 as they headed into the break.
Despite a spirited second-half push by the U.S. side, they were unable to find an equalizer. South Africa’s defense, anchored by an impressive performance from goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe, held firm to secure the three points.
While the defeat was the first for the U.S. in the tournament, their superior goal differential from earlier dominant wins was enough to maintain the top spot in Group E. Both the USA and South Africa finished the group stage with six points, alongside France, who also advanced.
Tournament Outlook
USA finishes atop Group E and will advance to the Round of 16 to face Italy.
South Africa finishes in second place in Group and also progresses to the knockout stage. Their Round of 16 opponent will be the winner of Group F.
The victory marks a significant achievement for the African champions, ensuring their deepest run in the tournament since 2009.
