Sudan 1-3 Nigeria: Super Eagles Continually Dish Football 101 Lessons In AFCON

The super Eagles have continued showing their class in the competition with convincing victories.

More than convincing against Egypt when they entered the tourney (1-0), the Super Eagles easily dominated Sudan on Saturday in Garoua (3-1). Thanks to the second victory in a row, Moses Simon – and his partners are guaranteed to participate in the round of 16 of the competition.

The Eagles struck at the start and end of the first period through Samuel Chukwueze, three minutes in, and Taiwo Awoniyi (45th), then by the Nantes player Moses Simon. Thanks to this second success, Augustine Eguavoen’s men consolidate their first place and especially validate their ticket for the round of 16.

After dominating the Pharaohs on the first day (1-0), the Nigerians coldly picked apart a weak Sudanese defense.

Simon took advantage of a long touch from the right to serve back Chukwueze, who opened the scoring with a low recovery at the ark of the box (1-0, 3rd minute).

Having scored his 4th goal in selection, the Villarreal player had obviously put his people in confidence. The Sudanese still ended up entering their match against opponents who quickly released the pressure. Burhan Tia’s men even turned the ball around well, but they also lacked any real attacking power. They backed down again as soon as the Super Eagles decided to troop forward. It was a free kick, deflected with a header by Troost-Ekong at the penalty spot and struck in with venom, from Awoniyi (2-0, 45th).

Decidedly not concentrated enough and too tender in both areas, the Sudan still cracked on the first action of the second period. Simon benefited from a deviation from Awoniyi to enter to the left of the zone of truth and deceive Abu-Eshrein to put his side 3-0 up.

The Super Eagles looked decidedly superior, but they slacked off during the second half. Ola Aina conceded an avoidable penalty for a shirt pulling and Sudan reduced the mark thanks to Walieldin Khidir (3-1, 70th). Nigeria did not let their lead slide further, as it ended 3-1.
