Sudan Aim for Historic AFCON Upset Against Star-Studded Senegal
Two days of rest have vanished in the twinkle of an eye, and now the festivities make way for fierce hostilities as the knockout stage ignites with Senegal clashing against the tournament’s surprise package, Sudan.
The game is scheduled for this Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier.
Senegal enters the fixture looking to banish the ghosts of their Round of 16 exit in the previous edition, while Sudan is celebrating their first appearance in the knockout rounds since 2012.
Historical Dominance and Past Meetings
The history between these two sides is heavily skewed in favor of the West Africans. In their seven previous meetings across all competitions, Senegal remains undefeated, boasting four victories and three draws. Most remarkably, 2025 served as a year of intense familiarity for the two teams, as they faced each other four times across World Cup qualifiers and the CHAN tournament.
Their most recent competitive encounter took place on September 5, 2025, during a World Cup qualifier where goals from the now-suspended Kalidou Koulibaly and Pape Matar Sarr secured a 2–0 win for the Lions of Teranga.
Sudan’s most resilient performances came earlier that year, earning 0–0 draws in both a March World Cup qualifier and a CHAN group stage match. Overall, the goal aggregate stands at 8–1 in favor of Senegal, with Sudan’s only goal in the fixture’s history coming during a 1–1 draw in the CHAN third-place playoff in August 2025—a game Senegal eventually won on penalties.
Pre-Match Talk: Respect vs. Ambition
Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, has spent the lead-up to the match dismissing any talk of complacency. During Friday’s press conference, he emphasized that his squad will approach the game with “utmost seriousness,” noting that Sudan is a disciplined and well-organized side that has proven difficult to break down. Thiaw also addressed the absence of his captain, confirming that while Kalidou Koulibaly is suspended for this match following a red card against Benin, the team is mentally prepared to fill the void. He highlighted that injuries to Iliman Ndiaye and Lamine Camara were minor and that both are expected to be available for selection.
On the other side, Sudan’s Ghanaian coach, Kwesi Appiah, has used the platform to speak about the broader significance of the match. He noted that while Senegal are the former champions and a continental powerhouse, his players feel a deep sense of responsibility to provide hope to a nation currently divided by civil conflict.
Appiah stated that Sudan deserves to be at this stage and that their “ultimate goal” remains to chase the AFCON title. Midfielder Ammar Taifour echoed these sentiments, describing the “big responsibility” the players feel to bring happiness to people back home, many of whom have been personally affected by the ongoing unrest.
Match Officials and Tactical Setup
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed a team of experienced officials to handle this round of 16 opener. Burundi’s Pacifique Ndabihawenimana will serve as the center referee.
Teranga Lions Possible 11
Tactically, Senegal is expected to maintain their fluid 4-2-3-1 formation. Edouard Mendy to start in goal, protected by a backline likely featuring Krépin Diatta, Abdoulaye Seck, Moussa Niakhaté, and Ismail Jakobs. The midfield engine room will be anchored by the “Gueye duo”—Pape and Idrissa—while the attacking trident of Ismaïla Sarr, Iliman Ndiaye, and Sadio Mané will look to provide service for the clinical Nicolas Jackson.
Sudan’s possible 11
Sudan is likely to adopt a more conservative 4-3-3 shape designed for containment and counter-attacks. Muhamed Alnour Abouja will be a busy man in goal, protected by a defensive line of Awad Zayed, Muhamed Kesra, Altayeb Abdelrazeg, and Mazin Mohamedein. In midfield, Al-Jezoli Nouh and Salah Adel will be tasked with disrupting Senegal’s rhythm, while the attacking hopes rest on the shoulders of John Mano and Yaser Mozamil.
