Sudan Keeps AFCON Hopes Alive with 1-0 Win Over Equatorial Guinea

Sudan secured its first victory of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, defeating Equatorial Guinea 1-0 at the Stade Mohamed V. The match was decided in the 74th minute by an own goal from defender Saul Coco, providing Sudan with three vital points in Group E.

The result marks a significant turnaround for Sudan following their 3-0 opening defeat to Algeria. For Equatorial Guinea, a second consecutive loss leaves their chances of reaching the knockout stages in serious jeopardy.

Tactical Breakdown

The match was characterized by Equatorial Guinea’s possession-based approach and Sudan’s disciplined defensive posture. Under head coach James Kwesi Appiah, Sudan remained compact, allowing Equatorial Guinea to hold over 60% of the ball while limiting clear-cut scoring opportunities.

The decisive moment arrived late in the second half. During a Sudanese counter-attack, a low cross into the penalty area caused a lapse in communication within the Equatorial Guinea defense. Saul Coco, attempting to intercept the ball ahead of the Sudanese attackers, inadvertently diverted it into his own net.

Despite several late attempts by Equatorial Guinea to equalize, including a late set-piece opportunity that was cleared by the Sudanese defense, Sudan held firm to maintain the clean sheet.

This win represents Sudan’s first victory in an AFCON finals match since the 2012 tournament.

After conceding three goals in their opener, Sudan’s backline, led by goalkeeper Monged Abuzaid, showed improved organization and composure.

Sudan now heads into their final group match against Burkina Faso on December 31st with a chance to qualify for the Round of 16.

Equatorial Guinea will face a difficult final match against Algeria, where they must win to have any mathematical hope of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams. Sudan remains in a position where their destiny is largely in their own hands.
