Super Eagles Captain Troost-Ekong Announces Shock International Retirement Weeks Before AFCON 2025

Nigeria’s  captain, William Troost-Ekong, has delivered a major shock to the Super Eagles camp by officially announcing his retirement from international football just weeks before the commencement of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The news, confirmed by the veteran defender himself in an emotional social media post on Thursday, December 4, 2025, brings to a close a distinguished decade-long career in the green and white jersey.

In a heartfelt message shared across his platforms, the 31-year-old center-back expressed his gratitude and deep honour in representing the nation, stating: “Honoured. Grateful. Forever a Super Eagle. Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter.” Troost-Ekong’s decision comes despite his recent inclusion in the Super Eagles’ preliminary 55-man squad for the continental tournament. He reportedly made the decision following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with his final game being the World Cup playoff defeat to DR Congo.

Since making his debut in an AFCON qualifier against Chad on June 13, 2015, under the late Stephen Keshi, Troost-Ekong’s career has been defined by leadership, resilience, and success. He retires with 83 senior caps and 8 goals for the Super Eagles, having featured in five major international tournaments, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup. His considerable medal haul includes an Olympic Bronze Medal from Rio 2016, an AFCON Bronze Medal in 2019, and most recently, the AFCON Silver Medal in 2024.

His crowning moment came at the delayed 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where he captained the team to the final, scored crucial goals, and was deservedly named the Player of the Tournament. Notably, he retires as the highest-scoring defender in AFCON history with five goals, cementing his legacy as one of Nigeria’s most influential defenders of the modern era.

Troost-Ekong’s sudden departure creates a significant void in both the defense and the leadership structure of the national team as they prepare for the AFCON tournament, which kicks off in a few weeks. The team management will now have to swiftly identify a new captain and a reliable partner in the central defense to replace the former “Oyibo Wall” stalwart. The defender stated he is “at peace” with his decision, believing it is time for the next generation of Super Eagles players to step up and write their own story. He confirmed that while he will no longer be an active player, he will remain closely involved with Nigerian football in a supportive role.
