Toko Ekambi calls time on international career aged 31
Indomitable Lions forward, Karl Toko Ekambi has called time on his international career – under a week after Cameroon’s elimination at the TotalEnergies 2023 AFCON.
After the 2017, 2019 and 2021 editions, Karl Toko-Ekambi participated in his fourth African Cup of Nations with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, at the AFCON 2023 edition which is currently being played in Cote D’Ivoire.
Contrary to the expectations of the Indomitable Lions’ fans, the national team was kicked out in the round of 16, with a 2-0 defeat against Nigeria.
The 2017 AFCON winner, scored 7 goals in four editions of the AFCON, bagging 5 at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.
The newly acquired Al-Ettifaq wide-man played his last match with the against Nigeria, as his Instagram message hints;
“Disappointed not to go further but proud of my team for giving everything. A fourth chapter of the AFCON closes, end of a story. Forever an indomitable Lion.” Ekambi wrote.
Having debuted for the national team in 2015, Karl Toko-Ekambi played 61 matches with the Indomitable Lions.
Ekambi scored 14 goals for the five-time African champions.
Ekambi’s most notable moments were at the AFCON 2021, where he scored 5 goals for Cameroon, and his goal in Blida, which took Cameroon to a record 8-time world cup appearance.
