Tusker FC Wins Kenyan League

Tusker FC have been crowned the Kenya Premier League champions after finishing the season top on the standings with 65 points.

The Brewers needed just a single point to reclaim the title as they took on Bidco United in the last match of the season on Sunday, August 22.

Robert Matano’s wards went on to stun the league newbies 2-1 to storm to glory, with KCB being forced to settle for a second-place finish. This is Tusker’s 12th Football Kenya Federation Premier League title and Matano’s second as the club’s head coach.

Matano took charge of the Ruaraka-based outfit in 2018, rejoining them six years after he helped them win the domestic title.

The tactician led Tusker to a third-place finish in 2018 but slipped one place down in the following season. However, despite the challenges that characterised the 2020/21 campaign including the coronavirus pandemic, Matano did manage to steer the club to victory.

The triumph came only weeks after he helped Tusker secure a slot in the CAF Champions League. Meanwhile, Gor Mahia, who are serial winners of the KPL had to contend with a…. Finish despite winning their last match of the season against Nzoia Sugar at the Ruaraka Grounds. Gor’s poor finish came amid a mixed season that was marked with the departure of Manuel Vaz Pinto who quit as the club’s head coach.

In a statement confirming Pinto’s abrupt departure, K’Ogalo said the decision had been reached by mutual consent.

Pinto’s exit came just days after he led the club to clinch the Betway Cup after victory over arch-rivals AFC Leopards.

There was so much more to play for during the tie as the winner was assured a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.
