Cameroon’s Wait For More Slots In CAF Tourneys Continue

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has published the 2021/22 list of countries authorized to register two clubs for the jamboree, and Cameroon missed out for the fourth season.

CAF tourneys are earmarked for September 10, 2021 with the first round of preliminaries. The group stages will begin in February. The selected 12 best-placed member associations selected for two representatives are: South Africa, Algeria, Angola, DR Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Morocco, Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia and Zambia.

Despite Cotonsport’s resurgence this season on the continent, Cameroon will have to wait a little longer to get back her two slots lost, due to lack of performances. The CAF Member Association ranking used as criteria to gain or lose slots, is based on the performance of the MA’s representatives in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup over a five-year period.

Tanzania is the new entrant, replacing Libya, vastly owing to the run made by Simba SC in this year’s CAF Champions League after the Mainland giants reached the quarterfinals.

In a period of five years, only Cotonsport have been able to reach the group phase in the CAF champions league (2017), before their most recent run in this season’s Confederation Cup.

A queue of other teams: PWD, UMS, New Stars, Stade Renard and Eding Sports have all flopped their lines, being unable to even-up with continental giants on the grandest stage on the continent.

With more stable performances from winners of the Cameroon Cup and premier division just like this campaign, slots will be regained by the country.
