U17 AFCON: Cameroon’s chances slimmer, after draw against South Africa

The U-17 Lions of Cameroon have reduced their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages of the ongoing Africa Cups of Nations in Morocco after a 0-0 draw against South Africa.

During the second game against South Africa, Cameroonian cub dominated the match against South Africa but failed to find the back of the net, conceding a goalless draw.

Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities and controlling the match, Cameroon lacked the luck needed to secure a win. The team’s dominance was evident in the statistics, with 55% possession, 77% successful passes (346 out of 444), 7 corners, 22 shots (9 on target), and 4 missed clear scoring opportunities.

A notable chance came in the first half when David Bondoma’s well-executed strike hit the post. Coach Saidou Alioum’s team will now face an uphill battle to qualify for the next round.

With only 1 point from two matches, Cameroon must win by the widest margin possible against Egypt on the third and final matchday of the group stage to hope for qualification.

While the result doesn’t spell the end for Cameroon, their campaign hangs in the balance with just one point from two matches and a final Group B fixture against a wounded Egypt. Amajimbos of South Africa are equally seeking to seal a victory that would assure them a place in the knockout stages and a ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

In the other Group B match, Burkina Faso defeated Egypt 2-1 to secure their ticket to the next round and book their place in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025.

Cameroon’s fate will be decided on the final matchday, and fans will be eagerly waiting to see if the team can turn their fortunes around.
