Unique Global FC Pioneering the Future of Gambian Football

Unique Global FC has established itself as a pioneer in West African sport, becoming the first football club in The Gambia to be entirely led by the private sector. Formerly competing under the names Toubabo FC and PSV Wellingara, the club’s origins lie in the Nawettan—the grassroots community tournaments that form the bedrock of Gambian football. Since its transition to private ownership, the club has climbed the national pyramid, rising from the regional third tier to the GFF First Division, where it has competed on two separate occasions. While currently playing in the second division, the club’s trajectory is now defined by an ambitious internationalization strategy.

Investment in Human Capital

The club’s management, led by President Papa Yusupha Njie—CEO of the technology conglomerate Unique Group—operates on the principle that sports infrastructure and education are essential tools for social development. Unlike the traditional model of community-run clubs, Unique Global FC utilizes a corporate structure to manage its first-class academy. The Board of Directors, which includes Vice President Saul Frazer and Director Lamin Manga, oversees a technical department headed by Ibra Jagne. Their primary objective is to move beyond local competition and transform raw talent into athletes capable of competing in professional global markets.

From the Nawettan to the National Stage

The club’s rise has been marked by several key competitive milestones. In 2015, the side secured the Kanifing Municipality regional title, earning their first promotion to the second division. By the 2018/19 season, they had reached the top flight of Gambian football for the first time. Though the team currently competes in the second tier, they secured the league championship as recently as the 2021/22 season. This history of promotion and domestic success serves as a foundation for a broader mission: fostering a resilient, professional mindset in young players that meets the requirements of the modern international game.

The London Connection and European Pathways

In 2025, Unique Global FC secured a landmark partnership with the London-based Elite Coaching Academy (ECA), an organization noted for its record in placing players within professional British clubs. This collaboration led to a major scouting and development event in January 2025, drawing over 200 young prospects from across The Gambia, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The event featured a high-level delegation of British scouts, including Jason Ngandu of Portsmouth FC and Adeyinka Adeniran of Millwall FC. The partnership has already yielded tangible results for the playing squad; three prospects—Abdoulie Danso, Modou Lamin Bojang, and Ousman Jammeh—were recently selected for intensive trials in Turkey. Furthermore, the initiative provided Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Gambian coaches, featuring insights from recruitment heads at Crystal Palace and Newcastle United.

A Regional and Nordic Strategy

The club’s expansion is not limited to the English market. Through a partnership with the PSG Academy Pro in Senegal, three of the club’s youth players are currently training at elite facilities in Saly, with a path toward professional contracts upon turning 18. This regional integration will culminate in 2026 with the inaugural Senegambia Cup, a tournament involving PSG Academy, Ping FC, and Medina United.

Looking toward the European North, the club has also formalized agreements with Icelandic sides Thor Akureyri FC and KA Akureyri. These partnerships offer Gambian players a gateway into the European league system, providing exposure to elite coaching and infrastructure. By aligning with established international brands, Unique Global FC is positioning itself not just as a local sports team, but as a specialized academy pipeline for the global game.
