Veteran Strategist Patrice Neveu Set to Lead Togo’s AFCON 2027 Ambitions
The Togolese Football Federation (FTF) has officially handed the reins of the national team to Patrice Neveu.
The 71-year-old French tactician arrives in the capital with a mandate to restore the Sparrowhawks to their former glory and navigate the challenging path toward the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
This appointment follows a rigorous search by the federation, which prioritized a deep-seated knowledge of African football—a requirement Neveu meets through his extensive history managing Guinea, DR Congo, Mauritania, and Gabon.
The decision to hire Neveu is largely anchored in his recent success during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the Gabonese national team. Under his guidance, the Panthers emerged as one of the tournament’s most resilient sides, navigating the group stages undefeated despite missing key stars due to health and disciplinary complications. Neveu’s ability to guide the squad into the Round of 16, where they only exited after a penalty shootout against Burkina Faso, proved that he can build a competitive unit even under immense pressure and personnel shortages.
Neveu’s coaching profile is defined by a preference for a 4-3-3 formation. Throughout a career spanning over 30 years and involving more than 100 international matches, he has demonstrated a capacity to stabilize teams and implement structural discipline. His journey has taken him across the globe, from early managerial roles in France with Fontenay-le-Comte to stints in China and various top-tier African clubs like Horoya AC and Ismaily SC.
Central to Neveu’s management style is his reputation as a firm disciplinarian. He is a manager who notoriously prioritizes the integrity of the collective over the whims of individual stars. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a willingness to make difficult decisions to maintain camp harmony, often stating that “there is no experimentation in selection” when results are on the line. The FTF believes that this “no-nonsense” approach, combined with his technical expertise, is the remedy needed to instill a new sense of professionalism within the Togolese dressing room.
