Warriors Announce Marian Marinica as New Head Coach Ahead of AFCON 2025

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has officially appointed veteran Romanian coach Marian ‘Mario’ Marinica as the new Head Coach of the senior men’s national football team, the Warriors. The appointment comes as a strategic move to revamp the team’s performance ahead of the upcoming 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco.

Marinica, 59, has been handed a one-year contract, with the immediate mandate of preparing the Warriors for the continental showpiece and laying the foundation for sustained long-term success. He succeeds German coach Michael Nees, who was dismissed following a disappointing, winless campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

A Wealth of International and African Experience

The UEFA Pro Licensed coach brings a rich resume spanning over 25 years across four continents, including significant experience in African football. His most notable recent achievement was guiding Malawi to the Round of 16 at the 2022 AFCON—their best-ever finish in the tournament. He also worked with Liberia, helping them achieve a significant leap in the FIFA Rankings in June 2024.

ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi expressed confidence in the new appointment. “We are delighted to welcome Coach Marinica to Zimbabwe,” the ZIFA statement read. “His wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven results at international level make him the ideal candidate to lead the Warriors into a new era.”

Marinica’s background also includes stints with various high-profile European clubs in coaching and technical roles, as well as serving as a Technical Director and Coach Educator. ZIFA highlighted that his track record in integrating diaspora talent and strengthening local coaching structures aligns perfectly with the federation’s long-term football development strategy.

Immediate Focus on AFCON 2025

Marinica will assume his duties immediately, with his first task being to oversee preparations for upcoming international friendlies against Algeria and Qatar.

The Warriors have been drawn into a tough AFCON 2025 Group B, where they will face:

Egypt
South Africa (Bafana Bafana) Angola

With the tournament scheduled for December 2025 to January 2026, the new coach has a limited window to instill his philosophy of “tactical discipline and high-intensity football” and forge a cohesive unit capable of challenging the group favourites.

His appointment signifies a crucial fresh chapter for Zimbabwean football as the nation seeks to restore its continental competitiveness following years of inconsistent results.
