WCQ: Conceiçao Confirms Bassogog Is Of Utmost Importance

Antonio Conceiçao at a presser yesterday November 10, revealed that having a player like Christian Bassogog around is always a plus, regardless of what obtains in the Chinese Super League.

Quizzed on the selection of Bassogog given that the Chinese Super League has been halted for some weeks, the Portuguese tactician replied;

‘We know that Bassogog has not been involved in top competition lately, but he is a player who trains regularly in France. He is a player who has enormous potential. The championship in China is halted today due to diversed reasons, so we prefer that Christian stays here and not in China for a month in quarantine,’ the former Cluj coach opined.

Antonio Conceiçao holds Bassogog in high esteem given his past exploits with the national selection.

The gaffer sees the former Aalborg winger as a warrior he needs to keep close tabs on!

‘He (Bassogog) is a player who has already given a lot for his country, he is a benchmark when talking of national team players – and I don’t give up my soldiers. I always have my soldiers by my side,’ Conceiçao cleared the air on the reason why he called up the 26-year-old Shanghai Shenhua player.

For other players; Oyongo and Andre Onana, coach Antonio told journalists that he has worked with the duo for a certain period of time, good enough to know what they bring on the table.

‘These two players have a recent past with us and they are quality players. As a coach, I have the fundamentals to build a group.

‘We are in the process of building something. We are approaching important times. These are players who are important and who have already played important competitions,’ Conceiçao ended.

Oyongo Bitolo is yet to play a game for the Montpelier senior selection since returning from injury, but he undoubtedly remains one of the best the country can boast of, at his left back position. For Onana, the keeper is only returning from a nine – month UEFA ban.

Cameroon travels later this evening for SA, where they will face Malawi on Saturday. The 6th and final game in this World Cup qualifiers phase will be against Cote D’Ivoire on the 16th. Two wins for Cameroon in this group will ensure that they make the knockout rounds for the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
