We Can Do It Again – Eto’o Confident Against Brazil In WC Group G

FECAFOOT boss Samuel Eto’o is oozing confidence inside – out, prior to Cameroon’s World Cup group G showdown against current top ranked side, Brazil.

Testament to Eto’o’s confidence is his post on his Instagram handle, carrying the message: ‘we have done it before, we can do it again.’

The sentence is made under Eto’o’s video of his first-time volley — perfectly timed, which caught Dida totally off guard in the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2003

Cameroon has triumphed over Brazil in two major instances; 2000 and 2003.

On September 23rd 2000,
schocks abounded in the men’s quarter-finals of the Olympic games, with highly-fancied Brazil losing to Cameroon.

Brazil were beaten by a golden goal in the 113th minute from Modeste Mbami to secure a 2-1 win for nine-man Cameroon in Brisbane.

Cameroon led through Patrick Mboma after 17 minutes and were within 60 seconds of winning in normal time when Ronaldinho struck a 20-yard free-kick past 16-year-old goalkeeper Carlos Kameni to send the match into extra time – after Cameroon had just had their second player sent off.

Geremi Njitap had been dismissed after 75 minutes and defender Aaron Nguimbat followed him after tripping Brazilian captain Alex, the foul that gave Ronaldinho the free-kick from which he scored.

Cameroon’s teenage keeper had an outstanding game and Brazil struggled against a team inspired by Kameni’s heroics in goal, a tenacious display from Lauren in midfield and a driving performance from Mboma up front.

Cameroon went on to defeat Chile and Spain to succeed Nigeria as Olympic gold medalists after Nigeria won it four years earlier in Atlanta.

2003 Confederations Cup

The participation of African champions Cameroon in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup in France was surrounded by dramatic moments both on and off the pitch.

Cameroon qualified for the tournament after winning the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations in Mali. Expectations were high because Cameroon had great players in its squad like Samuel Eto’o, Rigobert Song and Mark Vivian Foe. Cameroon played in group B alongside Brazil, Turkey, and the U.S.

Cameroon started the tournament playing Brazil, the 2002 FIFA World Cup winners. Cameroon defeated Brazil thanks to Samuel Eto’o goal in the last 10 minutes of the match. It was truely a goal that showed all what peak Eto’o was about in few seconds.

Cameroon went on to triumph over Turkey and Colombia, but lost the final to France, prolly due to the dramatic loss of Foe against Colombia. So there it is! Eto’o’s hope has some background.

In the World Cup, however, Brazil has defeated Cameroon in all two meetings; 1994 and 2014 – via 3-0 and 4-1 margins respectively.

After missing out on 2018 in Russia, Cameroon is returning to the big stage for the eighth time in their history. Karl Toko Ekambi notched a 124th-minute goal against Algeria to get a 2-1 win and book their spot in Qatar in the dying seconds of the match. They’ve only made it past the group stage once, when they reached the quarterfinals in 1990 and lost to England.
