Wounded Black Stars Take Aim At Uruguay 12 Years Later

Flashback to 12 years ago when the World Cup quarter-final between Uruguay and Ghana was dazzling as it headed towards a penalty shootout, when Luis Suarez entered international infamy with a deliberate handball on the goalline.

Referee Olegario Benquerenca from Portugal duly pointed to the penalty spot, and red-carded Suarez for the offence. But the big poster in the aftermath was Gyan holding his head after blasting against Muslera’s bar.

Uruguay went on to win on penalties, and fast forward 12 years later, they are set to meet again.

History will repeat itself after the draw for the Qatar 2022 World Cup which took place on Friday. Once again, Ghana and Uruguay will pit each other in the greatest competition in planet earth.

Ghana reached the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after forcing their arch-rivals Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Abuja, to qualify on the away goals rule.

Goalkeeper Francis Uzoho’s error allowed Thomas Partey to open the scoring for Ghana early in the second leg. William Troost-Ekong levelled from the penalty spot, but Nigeria missed several clear chances to win the match at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, as Ghana went on to go through.

Ghana will equally have Portugal and South Korea to worry about in group H, in their fourth World Cup finals.
