Wydad Draw Sundowns Out Of The TotalEnergies CAF champions league

Wydad Casablanca have eliminated Mamelodi Sundowns out of this season’s CAF Champions League.

The Moroccan giants picked a 2-2 draw to progress to the final on away goals rule after the first leg in Casablanca ended goalless.

The Sundowns, home for former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango, were on course for an important victory when Peter Shalule handed them a 2-1 lead in the 79th minute.

But Mothobi Mvala skewed a header in his own net in the 83rd minute for the whole packed Loftus Versfeld stadium to go into silence.

And it proved a little too late for the Masandawana to stage a comeback.

The game was goalless after halftime but Themba Zwane put the hosts ahead in the second half when he benefited from Wydad’s poor defending.

The Visitors found an equaliser when Jahya Jebrane picked Ayoub El Amloud to slot into the net in the 73rd minute.

Wydad Casablanca will now meet Al Ahly in the final, the latter having eliminated Esperance of Tunisia on a 4-0 aggregate win.

This, is the repeat of last year’s final that saw Wydad emerge 2-0 winners over the Egyptian and record winners.

This year’s final will be played on a home and away basis – Al Ahly will host the first leg in Cairo on June 4 before Wydad host the return leg in Casablanca on June 11.
