YANGA maul Simba 5-1 in Kariakoo derby

Tanzania’s reigning champions Yanga had a Sunday to remember as they claimed the Kariakoo Derby bragging rights in emphatic fashion following their thumping 1-5 win over fierce rivals Simba in a Round 8 league match played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

In a match that was attended by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Yanga made a strong statement of intent this season as they recorded a fourth straight win to go back to the top of the table in the Tanzanian Ligi Kuu Bara.

Just three minutes in, Zambian international Kennedy Musonda drew first blood for Timu ya Wananchi as he opened the scoring with a powerful header from a Kouassi Yao cross.

However, the lead just lasted six minutes as Simba managed an immediate response with Denis Kibu the man responsible for restoring parity with a headed goal from Saidi Ntibazonkiza’s outswing corner kick.

The game went into the half time break levelled at 1-1 but it is in the second half where Yanga came out for the second half a different animal.

It all started in the 64th minute when DR Congo international Maxi Mpia Nzengeli’s slotted into the bottom corner after being fed through on goal by a delicious Stephane Aziz Ki through pass.

Two would soon turn to three nine minutes later as Aziz Ki turned from provider to goal scorer when he finished off a perfect Yanga counterattack in the 73rd minute.

Nerves seemed to have gotten the better of Simba and they were made to pay for it when Nzengeli was put through on goal for an easy tap in for Yanga’s fourth of the match.

Peodoh Pacome Zouzoua drove the final nail in Simba’s coffin as he converted from the spot after Yanga were awarded a penalty with four minutes remaining.

The result saw Yanga open a two-point lead at the top of the table (21 over second placed Azam with Simba sitting in third on 18 points after the heavy defeat
