2023 AFCON Q: Indomitable Lions to host Burundi in Garoua
The sportgliz crew have received information that Cameroon will pit Burundi in its last TotalEnergies AFCON 2023 qualifiers game at the Roumde Adjia stadium on September 4, in Garoua.
The multi-purpose stadium in Garoua, serves as the home ground of country giants Cotonsport. Roumde Adjia holds 30,000 people and was built in 1978. The stadium was most recently used for games at the 2021 AFCON.
The choice of patch is courtesy of adminstrative reasons and the Indomitable Lions will have to go up North for the ultimate – deciding fixture.
While fans in the Center and Littoral regions miss out on the enthusiasm, on a flip side of the coin, there will be sheer delight for the northern part of the country, set to receive the team for the first time in more than a decade.
The last time the indomitable Lions played in Garoua dates back to 2010, in the Guinea-Gabon AFCON qualifiers match-up against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Indomitable Lions will relish a mirror of the Intermediate Lions’ performance at the Roumde Adjia last year. The home-based Lions trailed 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea, but overturned the deficit to win 2-0 in the reverse and booked a spot in the 2022 CHAN finals.
It is a must win game for the Indomitable Lions. With four points after a crucial home win against Namibia, Burundi is now third in the three-team Group C, level on points with second-placed Cameroon and one point behind Group leaders Namibia.
How things stand (eventualities)
A victory against Burundi will mean qualification as group C toppers for Cameroon.
A zero-all tie will see Cameroon qualify in 2nd position (due to the away goals).
A parity with a one-all minimum eliminates Cameroon. A defeat is of course, synonymous to elimination for Cameroon.
