Onana uncertain over 2023 AFCON

By Tracy Kwaleh

Cameroon’s first choice keeper Andre Onana remains uncertain towards the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire.

In a recent interview with club-side Manchester United, the keeper expressed uncertainty if called to join the Lions den come January 2024.

“If I’m called up [we’ll see], we don’t know if I will, let’s see what will happen in the next month.” He said.

The Manchester united goal-guard could miss seven or more games with the Red Devils, should he decide to answer the AFCON call which will run from January 13 to February 11.

United will play four premier league fixtures during that period, an FA Cup third-round, Champions League round of 16 should they qualify at group stage and the Carabao Cup if they make it to the semi-final scheduled between January 8 and 22.

Andre Onana won hearts at the Roumde Adjia stadium in Garoua, following his numerous key saves against Burundi.

Cameroon booked he 2023 AFCON qualifications ticket after defeating Burundi 3 0 in their return leg game, on September 12.

It was his first outing with the indomitable lions of Cameroon, following his controversial retirement and fall out with head coach Rigobert Song during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last year.
