AFCON 2023: Cameroon Vs. Gambia game preview

By Ngome Michael

Gambia and Cameroon set off to a pulsating group finale which is the second meeting in successive AFCON editions having clashed in the last quater final. Cameroon has a chance to rescue their AFCON but, certainly needs to beat Gambia in order to be sure of a place in the round of 16.

The 2017 Champions have just a point from two matches in Group C, having drawn against Guinea before falling to Senegal. Anything short of victory wont speak well for the Indomitable Lions as they will probably be eliminated from the tournament.

Rigobert Song’s men sit a place and a point above Gambia on group standings and will be eager for a win to atleast calm down the tension around fanbase and lessen growing criticisms on head coach.

Statistically, the five time winners have always had the most of their opponents, emerging victorious in all last three meetings. However team Cameroon is yet to keep a cleansheet at the tournament while the fact that Gambia hasn’t scored a goal in two matches promises to be a fascinating fourth meeting between the two.

The Scorpions are in a more desperate situation having to endure a poor start to the Nations Cup campaign losing 3-0 with 10men to Senegal and looked for a while like snicking a goal against Guinea to win a point but ended losing without a shot at goal in the entire game.

Gambia are on a four-game losing streak and have won just two of their last 10 games across all competitions. They are without a win in this fixture and Tom Saintfiet was categorical in his pre-match press conference stating his team will be out to end this streak.

Cameroon’s latest result ended a four-game unbeaten run and they will be looking to put out a response this Tuesday at Stade De La Paix in Bouake. Rigobert Song must therefore orientate his team to an offesive mindset game cognizant of their high ball possession in the first game.
