Mayele’s brace against Nouadhibou sends off Pyramids from CAF champions league
Pyramids FC, already eliminated from the group stage of the CAF Champions League, concluded their journey in the continental tournament with a 2-2 draw against Nouadhibou of Mauritania in the final round on Saturday.
Nouadhibou’s left winger Bessam Ahmed opened the scoring in the 64th minute, but Fiston Mayele of DR Congo equalized for Pyramids FC in the 73rd minute in Cairo.
Midfielder Issa M’bareck then doubled the lead for Nouadhibou in the 82nd minute, but Mayele scored the equalizer again in injury time, resulting in a 2-2 draw between the two sides.
Finishing at the bottom of Group A with five points, Pyramids FC managed only one victory and two draws.
The Egyptian side secured their place in the group stage with an impressive 6-1 aggregate victory over Rwanda’s APR.
Their campaign in the group stage began with a 1-0 home win over TP Mazembe of DR Congo, who had already qualified for the quarterfinals.
Pyramids suffered a 2-0 loss to Nouadhibou in the second round away from home, followed by a goalless draw against already qualified Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
Unfortunately, Pyramids FC experienced a 1-0 loss to Sundowns in Cairo in the fourth round of the group stage, before suffering a 3-0 defeat to TP Mazembe in Congo during the fifth round.
Since their emergence in 2018, Pyramids FC have rapidly become one of the powerhouses in the Egyptian league as they finished last season in the runners-up place.
Despite significant investments, they have yet to claim a title, falling short in the Egypt Cup final twice and the Confederation Cup final.
